TSE Compliance for Restaurants in Germany

Since 2020, electronic cash register systems must be equipped with a certified TSE. What does this mean for your restaurant?

What is a TSE?

The Technical Security Device (TSE) is a security module mandatory since January 1, 2020 under Section 146a of the German Fiscal Code (AO) for all electronic cash register systems in Germany. The TSE cryptographically signs every transaction and stores it tamper-proof.

What Restaurant Owners Need to Know

These requirements apply to all businesses with electronic cash register systems:

  1. Use Certified TSE

    Your POS system must have a BSI-certified TSE — as hardware module (USB/SD) or cloud TSE.

  2. Sign Every Transaction

    Every transaction — sale, cancellation, return — is cryptographically signed by the TSE.

  3. Receipt Obligation

    Since January 2020, a receipt must be issued for every transaction — digital or paper.

  4. Registration with Tax Office

    Cash register systems must be registered and deregistered with the local tax office.

  5. Retain Data for 10 Years

    All TSE data, receipts, and logs must be stored immutably for 10 years.
